One of the things guests love most about staying here is how quickly you can step out of the cabin and into the Sierra Nevada wilderness. Within just a short drive, you’ll find peaceful forest trails, scenic water views, and some of the most relaxing hikes in Tuolumne County.

Whether you’re here for a weekend reset or a longer getaway, these are our 3 favorite local hikes—personally chosen for their beauty, accessibility, and guest-friendly experience.

🌿 1. Columbia Ditch Trail — Best Easy Walk (Closest to the Cabin)

🚗 Drive from cabin: ~5–10 minutes🥾 Distance: ~5.4 miles round trip⭐ Difficulty: 1/5 (Very Easy)

If you only do one hike during your stay, this is the one we recommend most often.

The Columbia Ditch Trail is a peaceful, mostly flat trail that follows a historic water ditch through the forest. It’s incredibly relaxing—think tall pines, filtered sunlight, and a gentle path that’s perfect for all ages.

  • Minimal elevation gain (~95 ft)

  • Great for morning coffee walks or sunset strolls

  • Dog-friendly (on leash)

💡 Local tip: This trail runs through private land easements, so please stay on the path to help keep it open for future guests.

Why guests love it: It’s the easiest, most accessible way to experience the outdoors without needing hiking experience.

🌊 2. Lyons Dam Trail — Best Scenic Lake Hike

🚗 Drive from cabin: ~15 minutes🥾 Distance: Up to ~9.7 miles (out & back)⭐ Difficulty: 2/5 (Easy)

This is our go-to recommendation when guests want something a little more adventurous—but still very manageable.

The Lyons Dam Trail is a wide, gently graded trail that winds through pine, oak, and cedar forest before reaching a beautiful reservoir and dam.

  • Wide trail (great for groups, kids, or even light jogging)

  • Ends at Lyons Reservoir, built in the early 1900s

  • Flexible distance—go as far as you want and turn around anytime

💡 Local tip: If the gate is open, you can sometimes access the lake area by car—great for a picnic after your hike.

Why guests love it: You get lake views and a “true hiking” feel without a tough climb.

🌄 3. Main Tuolumne Ditch Trail — Best Moderate Adventure

🚗 Drive from cabin: ~15–20 minutes🥾 Distance: Up to ~12.3 miles (do shorter sections)⭐ Difficulty: 3/5 (Moderate)

For guests looking for something a little more unique, this is a hidden gem.

The Main Tuolumne Ditch Trail follows a historic water system dating back to the Gold Rush era, carrying water from Lyons Reservoir toward Sonora.

  • Scenic forest + historic flumes and catwalks

  • Mostly gradual terrain with a few short climbs (~843 ft gain)

  • Beautiful in spring when dogwoods bloom

💡 Local tip: Try a shorter out-and-back section near Lyons Reservoir if you don’t want to commit to the full hike.

Why guests love it: It’s the most interesting trail in the area—part nature walk, part local history experience.
