3 great hikes from the northeast : Tioga Pass / Tuolumne Meadows area
ordered shortest → longest:
🟢 1) Soda Springs + Parsons Lodge (shortest)
Distance: ~1.5–2 miles
Time: ~1 hour
Elevation gain: Minimal
Walk through Tuolumne Meadows to Soda Springs.
Why do this first:
Perfect acclimation day (you’re at ~8,600 ft)
Super low effort but still scenic
Good if you arrive mid-day or feel tired
👉 Think of this as your “arrival day” hike

🟡 2) Lembert Dome (medium)
Distance: ~2.5–3 miles
Time: 2–3 hours
Elevation gain: ~800–900 ft
Climb Lembert Dome for panoramic views over Tuolumne Meadows.
Why it’s perfect second:
Short but more physical (you’ll feel the altitude)
Huge payoff for the effort
Builds confidence before longer hikes
👉 Optional: add a bit toward Dog Lake if you want to stretch it

🔴 3) Lower Cathedral Lake (longest)
Distance: ~3.5–4 miles
Time: 3–5 hours
Elevation gain: ~500–700 ft
Hike to Lower Cathedral Lake, with views of Cathedral Peak.
Why save this for last:
Longer time on trail
More sustained effort
Classic alpine scenery—best “reward hike”
👉 You can extend toward Upper Cathedral Lake if you’re feeling strong

🧭 Simple 3-Day Flow
Day 1: Soda Springs (easy arrival / acclimate)
Day 2: Lembert Dome (short but punchy)
Day 3: Cathedral Lake (main scenic hike)
Quick take
Most relaxing: Soda Springs
Best views per mile: Lembert Dome
Most “Yosemite classic”: Cathedral Lake
🌿 Wild Card 1 : Elizabeth Lake (best quiet alpine lake)
Distance: ~4–4.5 miles round trip
Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation gain: ~800 ft
Trailhead: Tuolumne Meadows
Hike to Elizabeth Lake, tucked below the granite slopes of Unicorn Peak.
Why swap this in:
Much quieter than Cathedral Lakes
Similar “alpine lake” payoff
Feels more secluded and peaceful
👉 Swap for: Lower Cathedral Lake if parking is full or you want fewer people

🌲 Wild Card 2 : Dog Lake (best easy + quiet combo)
Distance: ~4 miles round trip
Time: 2–3 hours
Elevation gain: ~600 ft
Trailhead: Same as Lembert Dome
Head out to Dog Lake instead of climbing the dome.
Why swap this in:
Less steep than Lembert Dome
Shaded forest trail (nice midday option)
Usually way fewer people
👉 Swap for: Lembert Dome if you want something less exposed / less steep

🧭 Best flexible lineup (with swaps)
Day 1 (easy):
Soda Springs (or just explore Tuolumne Meadows)
Day 2 (moderate):
Lembert Dome OR Dog Lake
Day 3 (longer):
Cathedral Lake OR Elizabeth Lake
🧠 Local strategy tip
If a trailhead looks slammed → don’t wait too long
Just pivot to one of these wild cards
The scenery difference is minimal, but the crowd difference can be huge
